The narrator identifies the gendarme as Balducci and the schoolmaster as Daru but refers to the prisoner only as an Arab. Is the narrator suggesting that foreign control of a country robs the natives of their identity?

Scarlet Letter CH-chapter 5

In TWO well developed essays, suing textual evidence, answer the following:

During their interview, what is Chillingworth’s attitude toward Hester and her act of
infidelity?  Why is this important to the theme of the novel?  How does this set the tone, setting, mood, and any other elements for the story?

Why is it that the woman is persecuted and not the man?  Think not just about the current circumstances in the novel, but also about the time period.  Do we still do anything similar to this to woman today?

Review for Hamlet Test

I will release test questions of Hamlet for discussion.  A minimum of two people must answer and explain the answer for me to keep posting.  As long as there are at least 5 people participating throughout the post sequence I will continue to post until 10 tonight.

Hamlet Final Discussion

In TWO well developed paragraphs answer the following (25 points):

The big question of all of English literature: why does Hamlet drag his feet so long to avenge his father's murder? Is Hamlet "mad" or is he really just faking it?  Sure, plenty of scholar-types have tried to answer that, but maybe they've missed something. Give it a shot.

Respond to two of your classmates in a well developed paragraph (5 points each).  Due  November 30th Midnight.

"Ode to a Nightngale"

Answer the following in two well developed paragraphs:

How, in Stanza 7, does the bird's song lead the speaker beyond his immediate surroundings? What draws him back to himself in the final stanza? What does the poem suggest about the nature and duration of vision that the speaker has attained as he listens to the nightingale?

For bonus you may respond to a classmate in a minimum of 5 sentences that build on the argument that you or the classmate has made.

Hamlet Act 2 Discussion

Make a list of character traits that Hamlet possess as seen in Acts 1 and 2.  How are these traits of Hamlet used to characterize him both externally and internally?

Answer the following in at least 2 well developed paragraphs. Be sure to use evidence from the novel and support your analysis. (20 points)

• What role does Big Brother or Emmanuel Goldstein have in the book? Do they exist? Must they exist? How do they affect Winston? Is Winston’s obsession with Big Brother really the same as his obsession with Goldstein? 
• Take a look at the ending of the book.  Now reflect upon statements that Winston has made about accepting Big Brother, torture,  and other foreshadowing elements.  What has happened to Winston?  Has he truly accepted and love Big Brother?  What may be implied at the end of the novel?

 After making your original post, reply to two other posts with a 5 sentence paragraph. (5 points for each). Due on Monday 10/20 at midnight

Think about Newspeak. Does language shape thought? Action? Is language necessary for either thought or action? Without language, does reality exist? Does perception?

Would you feel differently about the story if the roles of Jig and the man were reversed; that is, if Jig wanted the abortion and the man wanted her to marry him and keep the baby?  How would the feel of the story be different if the narrator was from 3rd person omniscient?
